Preparing Your Materials

Step 1

To start your project, measure and mark your lumber into six 61 cm (2 ft) sections.

                                  measure and mark your lumber

Step 2

Once you have marked your lumber into the proper lengths, carefully cut where you have marked. You will now have six lengths of board that are all the same length.

carefully cut where you have marked

Step 3

Next mark a spot that is 5 cm (2 in) in from the end of each board. Mark both ends of each board. The mark should be placed on the smaller dimension of the lumber.

mark a spot that is 5 cm 2 in in from the end of each board

Step 4

Using a drill bit that is of a similar diameter to the rope or cord you are using, drill a hole through the board at each place you marked. Each board should have two holes, one at each end. These holes are where the cord will be threaded to hold the mat together.

drill a hole through the board

Step 5

Sand any rough edges or areas of the boards. If you are planing to paint or stain your boards, do so after sanding.

Sand any rough edges or areas of the boards

Assembling Door Mat

        Step 1

To assemble your doormat, tie a knot at one end of each length of cord. Make sure that the knot is large enough that it does not pull through the hole drilled in the lumber. Thread the cord through the hole until the knot is flush with the board. Repeat for the other hole.

tie a knot at one end of each length of cord

Step 2

Now thread a bead onto the cord. Repeat for the other side of the board.

thread a bead on to the cord

Step 3

Thread the next board on, and continue to thread boards and beads in an alternating fashion for both sides of the doormat. Once you have threaded all the boards and beads, tie a knot flush with the board, as we did in step 1.

                              Trim excess cord
